Out of the Arena
Bassist John Jowitt has left Arena one year short of their 20th anniversary. John joined Arena soon after they formed in 1995, after leaving another successful and well known band, namely IQ.
Arena, whose members are Clive Nolan, Mick Pointer, Paul Manzi and John Mitchell, have not named a replacement yet but have released this statement:
Due to time pressure and numerous commitments, we are sad to announce we will be parting ways with John. This is a mutual decision, and we’d like to wish John good luck with his future projects, and say thanks again for all his work with Arena.

Review: Yes' Heaven & Earth
Yes – Heaven & Earth
Tracks Listing
1. Believe Again (8:02)
2. The Game (6:51)
3. Step Beyond (5:34)
4. To Ascend (4:43)
5. In A World Of Our Own (5:20)
6. Light Of The Ages (7:41)
7. It Was All We Knew (4:13)
8. Subway Walls (9:03)
Musicians
Steve Howe / Electric Guitar, Acoustic & Steel Guitars, Backing Vocals
Chris Squire / Bass Guitar, Backing Vocals
Alan White / Drums, Percussion
Geoff Downes / Keyboards, Computer Programming
Jon Davison / Lead & Backing Vocals, Acoustic Guitar on tracks 1, 4 & 6
Label: Frontiers Records (Universal)
Yes have been able to navigate through the years with different guitarists, different singers, different keyboard players, and different drummers, while still maintaining their essence. Think of The Yes Album, which introduced us to Steve Howe, or Rick Wakeman’s debut on Fragile, Alan White’s on Topographic, Patrick Moraz’s on Relayer. Think of the double whammy that brought us Drama – Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes. I mean, the f-ing Buggles helped create a better album than the “classic version” of Yes ever could with Tormato.
Then we come to the ultimate change – the Trevor Rabin years – starting with 90125. Even the purists got caught up with the popularity that Yes were acquiring thanks to the South-African guitarist. Although this popularity brought with it new legions of fans, the rest of the 90s would see a slow but steady decline in both originality and popularity.
All this to say that changes in personnel cannot be used as an excuse for a bad album. On the contrary, most of these changes seem to have pushed the band even further in their own musical self discovery, and brought us some great albums. This latest iteration should not be different.
So, is this album as bad as many reviewers say it is? The easy answer is no, but it’s more complicated than that.
I used to jokingly say that the last two great Yes albums were Glass Hammer’s If and Magenta’s Seven, and this is not to disparage Glass Hammer or Magenta as Yes clones, which they certainly are not. But those two albums have more of a Yes feel than this new offering.
Like its predecessor Fly from Here, this album needs multiple listening to really get a feel of the album as a whole. I originally hated Fly from Here, thinking that the title track was a bloated expanse of what originally was a straightforward song first played live during the Drama tour. I still think the song is too long, but as a whole I grew to love the album.
Same goes here. Heaven & Earth doesn’t contain the best music Yes have ever written, but neither is it a dud. The songs are pleasant enough and listenable. Tracks like Believe Again and To Ascend could have easily been sung by Jon Anderson, while Subway Walls could have been on an Asia album. As a whole the songs are closer to Turn of a Century and Madrigal than to Close to the Edge. The only truly objectionable track here is Step Beyond, which is an insipid song whose bouncy keyboard parts grate on one’s nerves.
Jon Davison does an admirable job as lead vocalist and co-composer, especially on Light of the Ages, one of the best songs on the album. In fact he is the glue that holds this album together as he was fully involved in writing or co-writing all but one of the songs. The other members of the band are competent enough but not exceptionally so. There are no standout riffs or solos. There is no sense of adventure in the songs.
In short, Heaven & Earth is unobjectionable and accessible. One wonders what could be done with this line-up if they really wanted to explore and expand musically.

Pink Floyd's Big Announcement: New Album
Right on the heels of the release of their 20th Anniversary Box Set Edition of The Division Bell, the last album by David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Rick Wright, comes news that a new album is in the works.
The new album, titled The Endless River, was announced by Gilmour's wife and lyricist, Molly Samson.
Btw Pink Floyd album out in October is called "The Endless River". Based on 1994 sessions is Rick Wright's swansong and very beautiful.—
Polly Samson (@PollySamson) July 05, 2014
Later that same day singer Durga McBroom-Hudson confirmed it by posting a picture of the background vocals recording sessions on her Facebook page.
It seems the recordings did start during the recordings of The Division Bell, and they are those referred to, at the time, by drummer Nick Mason as The Big Splif. These are recordings that started during jam sessions with Rick Wright, and it seems that Wright's playing will be left on these new recordings.
Originally it was to be a wholly instrumental album, but now Gilmour has started adding his vocals on some songs.
Now, is this what was originally thought to be the new Gilmour solo album re-cast as a Pink Floyd album, Or is his solo album put on hold so as to concentrate on these recordings? No official word has come out except for these social media posts, so stay tuned.
Tell me what you think!

Audio Fidelity to Release Renaissance's Scheherazade and Other Stories
One of the signature albums of 1970's Prog Rock, Renaissance's legendary album Scheherazade and Other Stories, is now available through Marshall Blonstein's Audio Fidelity on limited numbered Hybrid SACD.
1975's Scheherazade and Other Stories is a beautifully crafted album, expertly sung and played by Renaissance. The recording is filled with lush, orchestral progressive pop-rock and considered by many music critics to be their best album. Unlike other prog-rock groups, Renaissance eschewed much of the technology in favor of acoustic instruments and orchestral arrangements. Electric guitars and synthesizers were seldom used, giving the band's music more of a symphonic sweep.
The work is unique because it represents a rare example of musical collaboration between Michael Dunford and the rest of the group. Dunford and lyricist Betty Thatcher wrote the three vocal sections, keyboard player John Tout wrote the opening fanfare and fugue sections, with bass player Jon Camp working with Dunford and Tout on the other sections. And, of course, there is Annie Haslam's soaring, pure vocals. The orchestrations were arranged by Tony Cox.
Aficionados of classical music will also appreciate the album.
Track List:
1- Trip to the Fair - 10:51
2- The Vultures Fly High - 3:04
3- Ocean Gypsy - 7:05
4- Song of Scheherazade - 24:39
i. Fanfare
ii. The Betrayal
iii. The Sultan
iv. Love Theme
v. The Young Prince and Princess as told by Scheherazade
vi. Festival Preparations
vii. Fugue for the Sultan

Echo Us Set to Release 4th Full-Length Album
Echo Us will release their new album this fall, and it will be the final work in their trilogy. The worldwide release of the fourth full-length studio album, II:XII, À Priori Memoriaé is due Sept. 12th (EUROPE), Sept. 15th (UK), and Oct. 7th (USA) . The album will be released on digipak as well as through all digital outlets, with distribution through SPV and worldwide partners.
Echo Us won an Independent Music Award for “Best Eclectic” with 2012’s Tomorrow Will Tell The Story. Like Tomorrow Will Tell, the new album again features the voice of Grammy-nominated vocalist, Henta.
Producer and composer Ethan Matthew had this to say:
"The Echo Us project itself started in a mental ward- you can’t get much further out than that! I was in a very messed up space for many years, and making these albums was basically a therapy for me, but as things grew it became much more obvious that the music could guild me to better places, and in turn guild others possibly coming out of traumatic situations as well. I never thought I’d be able to do this on my own- and it’s an interesting story to tell looking back now.”
An animated video for the track Nightlight is available for viewing now, and an album preview was recently released.
A video for the instrumental cut Chrysalis will also surface this fall. Clips of Chrysalis are offered up in the preview for a glimpse of what is to come, as Echo Us moves forward with their latest offering.
