Steven Wilson's 'Get All You Deserve' World premiere screening in London

The world premiere of Get All You Deserve, a new concert film from Steven Wilson will take place at the Prince Charles cinema at London’s Leicester Square on September 6th at 7.30pm.

Directed by long-time visual collaborator Lasse Hoile, Get All You Deserve was filmed in Mexico City during the recent Grace For Drowning Tour. The film is part of a new high definition audio-visual set which captures the spectacular live experience that Wilson and Hoile created for the tour on Blu-ray, DVD and 2CD.

Following the screening there will be a Q&A session where Steven will be available to answer questions from the audience about the film. Tickets for the screening are available from the cinema website for £12 (plus 75p booking fee).

Grace For Drowning was the second album released under Wilson’s own name, following 2009’s exceptionally well-receivedInsurgentes. The album, released in September 2011, entered the UK top 40 album chart at #34, both the Dutch and German national charts at #22, the US Billboard Rock album chart at #19 (#13 in independent chart) and debuted at #7 in the Polish national charts.

Following the release of Grace For Drowning, Steven embarked on his first ever solo tour, assembling a virtuoso band, featuring Marco Minnemann (drums), Nick Beggs (bass), Theo Travis (flute and sax), Adam Holzman (keys) and Niko Tsonev (guitars), to accompany him. For the shows he worked extensively with Lasse to create a show unlike nothing else that he had ever done with his other bands, Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, No-Man or Bass Communion.

The shows submerged fans in a rich sensory experience: rear speakers provide surround-sound effects, giant screens show off Lasse’s films made specifically to accompany these songs, and cutting-edge lighting designs giving texture to each song.

Get All You Deserve captures one of the highlight shows from the tour. Recorded at a sold-out Teatro Metropólitan in Mexico City, the gig features tracks from both Wilson’s solo albums along with the new, as yet unreleased, track Luminol.

The limited deluxe edition of the 4 disc set (Blu-ray, DVD & 2CD) is packaged in a DVD sized hard-back 40 page book. It is now available to pre-order from the Kscope store for the early-bird price of £24.99 (+ P&P).

Standard retail editions (stand alone DVD and Blu-ray plus 4disc set) will also be in stores from September 24th.

IZZ's John Galgano to Release Debut Solo Album

RLiM Cover.jpg
Doone Records is pleased to announce the release of Real Life is Meeting, the debut solo album by John Galgano.

John Galgano is a founding member of art-rock group, IZZ, and has been one of the band’s primary songwriters throughout its career. Real Life is Meeting presents eight tracks varying in styles and instrumentation, from the catchy, art-pop flavor of “Bigger on the Inside,” to the experimental, synth-based “The Only Thing,” to the 19-minute piece “1000,”all the while taking the listener in unexpected directions.

Real Life is Meeting showcases Galgano’s humor, his introspective and confessional lyrics, and his surprising song structures. In turns breathtakingly adventurous and heartrendingly beautiful, this music represents a musician and songwriter unencumbered byany preconceived ideas. The result is a fluid, naked, and daring collection of universal musings set to music - meditations on what it means to be human in the 21stcentury.

Galgano also recently played bass on Renaissance keyboardist Jason Hart’s new release, I and Thou’s Speak. Galgano has performed with IZZ at many art-rock festivals in the United States and Canada and has played bass for Hart while serving as the opening act during two Marillion Weekends (2007, 2011).

The line-up for Real Life is Meeting is:
John Galgano: Bass guitar, vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, keyboards
Laura Meade: Vocals
Paul Bremner: Electric guitar solos on “The Only Thing” and “Look Around”
Brian Coralian: Drums on “Lucky for Me” and “1000”
Greg DiMiceli: Drums on “This is How it Happens”
Shawn Bishop: Backing vocals, keyboards, percussion
John Raimondo: Drums on“Bigger on the Inside,” “The Only Thing” and “Look Around”
Chris Baldini: Lead vocals on“Look Around”
Greg Meade: Electric guitar solo on “Lucky for Me”

Mixed and Produced by Shawn Bishop
Mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer John Shyloski

Subterranea Kickstarter More than Halfway There!

(SEE UPDATE BELOW) You may have noticed that I've been spending a lot of time promoting the Kickstarter page for Mathew Miller's Subterranea film project. Well now, with 5 days left to amass the $30,000 he needs to produce the film, the project was pledged $17,675!! Four days ago the pledges didn't amount to 8,000, so a big thank you to the people who have decided to pledge for this worthwhile project.

Now that the halfway mark has been reached, Mathew posted a test preview of Subterranea. Here it is:

Of coursem this doesn't mean you must still wait. If this project interests you and you haven't pledged yet, go now to the Subterranea Film Kickstarter page and read up on the project and pledge!

UPDATE: With less than 53 hours left to go, the Kickstarter page has ammased $25,910!!! Only 4,090 left to go... I know it can be done!

After three years of hard work, Kompendium, a side project of Magenta’s Rob Reed, will release their debut album, "Beneath The Waves," on September 24th.

“It’s ridiculous, but it has taken three years to get things finished. The project has been massive, the idea being to emulate what people like Mike Oldfield, Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush used to do.
“This is classic prog with Celtic influences. It’s a concept album, and hopefully will appeal to those who enjoy War Of The Worlds, Dark Side Of The Moon and Tubular Bells.”

Featuring a veritable who’s who from the progressive world icluding Steve Balsamo – vocals, Steve Hackett – nylon guitar, Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) – drums, Nick Beggs (Steve Hackett Band) – stick bass, Troy Donockley (Nightwish) – Uilleann Pipes, whistles, Nick Barrett (Pendragon) – guitar, Neil Taylor (Tears For Fears) – guitar, Jakko Jackzyk (20th Century Skitzoid Band) – guitar, Francis Dunnery – guitar, John Mitchell (It Bites, Arena etc.) – guitar, Mel Collins (King Crimson, Camel) – saxophone, BJ Cole (Elton John, David Gilmour) – pedal steel guitar, Chris Fry (Magenta) – guitar and Christina Booth (Magenta) – backing vocals.

Spock's Beard to Release new CD in January 2013

The new album was originally scheduled for Fall 2012, but Spock's Beard recently revealed that about 75% of recording is now completed and the new album will now be released in January 2013, with a tour to follow shortly afterwards.

The album will be available as a regular CD, Limited Edition CD (with bonus track) and via download.

Pre-ordering will be announced shortly.
"We're seeing light at the end of the tunnel! Recording of our 11th studio CD is coming along very nicely and we're probably about 75% finished with all tracking. After that will be mixing and mastering of course, then off to the manufacturer to press all the copies that we will be offering as a Limited Edition for pre-order customers, much like we did for "X".
Speaking of the Limited Edition, we'll start taking pre-orders soon. We're getting started on that because of technical issues, but that's a completely separate deal from the recording process and we're still on track for a November or early December mailing date for the Limited Edition.
The record label release date will most likely be sometime in January, and then the plan is to do a little touring in February or March.
Of course we're still not far enough along in the process to announce these dates with 100% certainty, but if we continue at the same pace as we're going now I think we'll be OK.
Like last time, people pre-ordering the Limited Edition will receive their copy at least a month in advance of the general release date. As added incentive to pre-order, the Limited Edition will also have a bonus track that will not be included on the standard edition.
We'll have an expanded number of options available for pre-ordering including some very unique items.
Another option that we'll be offering this time is a digital download version of the CD for those who prefer that medium over the physical CD.
We're all pretty excited about how this one is shaping up, so stay tuned for more details as they develop."

In the meantime you can listen to clips by clicking on this YouTube promotional video.

Subterranea Feature Length Film Needs You

Ten days ago I wrote a post about this fantastic project by young film maker Mathew Miller here. Mathew needs 30,000 dollars to finish his film, so he turned to Kickstarter to help him amass the amount he needs.

From his Kickstarter page:

We are launching this Kickstarter campaign in order to support our feature film, 'Subterranea'. We're adapting this film from legendary prog rock band IQ's concept album of the same name. We are working vigilantly to translate the vibrant images the music has projected in our minds as fans onto the big screen. Now, we need your help, to fund this film and bring this unique story to life!

When I wrote the first post about 50 people had pledged various amounts to breathe life into this project. Since then 45 more people have pledged to support his movie. There are 9 days left to pledge before the Kickstarter program runs out. For those of you who don't know how Kickstarter works here is a primer: Kickstarter is an all or nothing campaign. They don't get any of the money unless they reach their $30,000 goal. So if they don't reach that goal all the money goes back to the donators and the project won't be made.

What do you get when you pledge?

It depends on how much you pledge. For a $25 pledge you'll get a DVD or BluRay of the completed film plus a movie poster. For a $50 pledge you'll get the above PLUS a digital download of the brand new soundtrack recorded by IQ! Yes, that's right, if the project goes through IQ will re-record Subterranea for the movie version. Better yet, at the $5,000 level you'll get to meet IQ during the recording of the scoring sessions. There are many levels so any one level is affordable to someone.

So go! Read! And pledge what you can. It would be a shame if this fell through. There are only 9 days left.

FarFest Cancelled (A Bit of Old News)

Farfest

I was simply catching up on news about the various Festivals around the world (for the Festival page on this website), when I found out that the FarFest Festival has been cancelled. I'm a month late with this news, as it was announced on July 18th. Sorry about that.

Again, this is due to low ticket sales, but the problem may be larger than that. Multi-day festivals are on the decline in North America, and the socio-economic situation may be partly to blame. This year saw the last iteration of NEARfest, but we had an inkling that things weren't going well last year when NEARfest was cancelled. The Three-Rivers Prog Rock Festival also ended a couple of years ago, as did ProgFest in California and the FMPM here in Montreal.

Sure, some festival still carry the flame, like Quebec's Terra Incognita Festival and the upcoming ProgDay in Virginia. It seems like the place to be for Festivals is in the UK. But even they are starting to have problems staying afloat. What are the true causes for this? They might be many, but it is still a damned shame.

Line-Up changes for Manning

Two days ago, on the Manning website, it was announced that both guitarists would be leaving after the Summer's End concert. Guy Manning wrote:

It is always sad losing any band member and this time we have two going off together (well not together, together but at the same time! Ed.)

Chris and Kev are both fabulous guys and great players and have supported me and the rest of Manning brilliantly for some years now. It will really not be the same without them but we will, I know, forever remain close friends.

We travelled to RoSFEST together, played ProgMeister Festival, DanFest, the Cambridge Rock Festival a few times and many CRS plus other assorted UK dates . We also recorded/performed some fantastic music together.

Sadly, geography got in the way...I wish them well with everything they do from here on in and any outfit they join will be very lucky indeed to have them, but it is not over just yet though, we still have a few gigs to do with them, thankfully! The Europe experience is next!!!!

Today the replacement was announced!

We are pleased to announce that former MANNING guitarist extraordinaire, David Million is returning to the fold for both Elektrik and Akoustik work! David will be the sole lead guitarist when Kev and Chris depart (after Summers End in September), so he has alot of work to do in replacing both these fabulous players, but David is well up for the challenge!
In other news, Manning will be releasing an Acoustic album by year's end, and have already demoed 9 tracks for an (as yet unnamed) album.

Greg Lake Extends Songs of a Lifetime to UK and Europe

Legendary singer and songwriter Greg Lake tours the UK and Europe in Songs of a Lifetime, a shared musical journey and performance experience, which received rave reviews from fans and critics alike in North America. The tour begins this November 2012 in the UK.

Hailed as an "artistic triumph" and "the experience of a lifetime", Songs of a Lifetime gives new insight into Greg Lake and his influences, while showcasing the influence his writing and voice have had not only for rock and roll, but contemporary music of all types.

Greg Lake has long been considered a legendary voice and musical powerhouse whose impact changed the landscape of rock and roll. Many simply refer to him as “The Voice.” Visionary and creative, Songs of a Lifetime provides an evocative, emotional ride into the life and music of one of the world’s most popular songwriters in a unique format which relies on audience involvement as well as the artistry of the performer.

The tour gives theatre goers the opportunity to hear songs written by Lake and others from Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, the Beatles, Curtis Mayfield, Elvis, and more reimagined and reinterpreted for the stage. Audience members are encouraged to ask questions and share musical memories. The customized design allows for a different and personal experience for the audience and artist every night, featuring stories of Lake’s encounters with other musical greats who influenced him as well as shared memories created from what Greg calls “the shared journey” he has with the audience which allows the gift of music to “move from soul to soul and spirit to spirit.”

The show’s appeal has moved beyond fans of Greg Lake’s music, which helped fuel generations of rock and roll, to those who simply love music. Both those intimately familiar with Greg’s music and those who come to the show with roots in classical, blues, and succeeding generations of rock and roll find themselves enchanted and entranced.
“The concept of performing an intimate and autobiographical show presents a huge challenge,” Lake says. “The evolution of the experience is so invigorating it still gives me a thrill every time I think about it. The task is to develop an event that is memorable and unique, unexpected and impactful. I want to defy expectations and defy what people expect when they hear the words ‘one man show’. I am pleased to say that we have been successful in stepping up to that challenge to create an experiential show that is as much an event as it is a performance.”
“We create an intimate and unusual event together,” he adds. “However, at the end of the night the most important [thing] of all is that everyone feels entertained and enriched by the whole live experience.”

More surprises are ahead for fans and each show is both exciting and different. Lake has taken care to explode expectations of the ordinary to create something extraordinary.
“This is not a boring show, with me just strumming folk songs,” Greg promises. "It is a highly produced show with lots of drama and pathos,” he continues. “Everyone feels part of something indescribable, remarkable and enlightening, as well as having been entertained by shared memories of our musical journeys together.”

The UK and European legs of the tour follow a successful North American run, with rave reviews by audience members and critics alike.
"If you love music, you will love this show. I've never felt so much part of what is happening."
"Greg Lake's music is the music of my life. I can't believe that I had the opportunity to speak with him, laugh with him, and to feel as if he and I were in his living room, good friends sharing good times."
"Greg Lake is so humble and moving. He speaks with deep respect and humility of his idols in rock and roll, while the audience regards him as the iconic equals of those he honours."
"It is an amazing show, not to be missed. I've seen it all and thought I heard it all, but if you love music, if you love rock and roll, you want to be part of this."

The tour coincides with the upcoming release of Greg Lake’s autobiography, Lucky Man, and was inspired by it, but the two are not the same.

The autobiography is NOT an audio recording of the show, but a narrative of Lake’s experiences from childhood to the present, including never before revealed details, funny and poignant moments, and colorful facts of his amazing career as one of the world’s leading and influential musicians, songwriters, vocalists and poets. The autobiography will be released in three audio book volumes, read by the author. The first volume will be available at the show; the complete print edition is anticipated at the end of the year.

New editions of Greg Lake’s solo albums and DVDs are also expected to be made exclusively available to those fans in attendance.

Special VIP packages, which include sound check attendance, post-show interaction and photo opportunities, post-show receptions with the singer and signed merchandise, are available at www.greglake.com.

Two New Albums from Coheed and Cambria

Coheed and Cambria have announced the release dates of their new opus "The Aftermath". Yes, you read correctly, release dates. The album is a double one that will be released as two single albums. Volume One, "The Afterman: Ascension," will be released on October 9th 2012 and Volume Two, "The Afterman: Descension," in February 2013. The Afterman follows up 2010′s well received "The Black Rainbow."

As with all of their previous work, the albums are part of a greater story set within an alternate universe, and these two are specifically set during "The Armory Wars".

Claudio Sanchez says:
“This is without a doubt, the most honest record I’ve ever written. Though all the songs can be interpreted through our main character in the story, they were initially written in a very spontaneous manner"
"In the past, I’ve always had a predetermined idea of what the story was going to be when I approached the songs. With ‘The Afterman’ being a new story within ‘The Amory Wars’ arc, I allowed the events of my life to drive the concept, and therefore opened up the songwriting to a fuller degree."

You can read more about it in the pages of Rolling Stone. In the meantime, here is the beautiful official trailer for the albums.

Rumour Has It (Pink Floyd Olympic Edition)

Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, interviewed on Radio Nova in Australia, announced that he will be playing at the closing ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympics . But that is not the big news... Spoiler Alert.

The Big News is that he said he will be singing with a partially-reformed Pink Floyd!!

So after having Mike Oldfield and Paul McCartney live for the Opening, now we have Pink Floyd for the Closing!! The partially reformed Pink Floyd may means David Gilmour and Nick Mason or Roger Waters and Nick Mason, but not both Waters and Gilmour.

Learn more at Ed Sheeran's website (it's in german).
