Listeners' Top 30 CDs of 2012, Part One

Today, Friday the 1st of February, will air the IPRS Listeners' Top 21 CDs of 2012. As an "amuse-bouche" I am posting the follow-up to that list... numbers 22 to 30.

All of these CDs were on the top of a listener's list, either #1 or #2, but unfortunately not enough people had put these CDs on the top of their lists to push them in the Top 20. They are all magnificent CDs and well worth a listen.

Listen to the IPRS #118: Top 21 CDs of 2012 on UK 70s Prog Rock today at 2 PM E.S.T. I will post the albums on this website after the show has aired.

Mars Volta Disbanded

According to the Guardian Newspaper, the american prog metal band The Mars Volta is no more.

After six albums and more than 10 years, the Mars Volta have split. Singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala announced on Twitter that he is dissolving the band, blaming a lack of interest from guitarist and co-founder Omar Rodríguez-López.
“I can’t sit here and pretend any more,” Bixler-Zavala said. Though Mars Volta released an album in March 2012, they went on hiatus following that tour. “We’re all doing different things,” Rodríguez-López explained at the time. This week, the guitarist revealed the first music from his new project, Bosnian Rainbows.

Cristiano Roversi Releases 3rd Solo Album 'AntiQua' Featuring Former PFM and Le Orme Members

The worldwide progressive rock community is buzzing with excitement about the third CD release by Italian musician, composer, keyboardist, bass and Champan stick player Cristiano Roversi titled 'AntiQua', featuring guest appearances by Le Orme's Aldo Tagliapietra and PFM's Bernardo Lanzetti, among others! Founding member of the new progressive band Moongarden in 1994, very much a vital entity to this day, Cristiano over the years has explored a variety of musical genres in collaborative projects such as Submarine Silence, Cavalli Cocchi, Lanzetti & Roversi, as well as numerous solo projects, soundtracks and session/production/teaching work. Currently writing and playing keyboards for Mangala Vallis and producing Catafalchi Del Cyber, Cristiano has, in recent years, collaborated with many well known and respected names such as Bernardo Lanzetti, Aldo Tagliapietra, John Wetton, Steve Hackett, David Jackson, Massimo Zamboni, Flaco Biondini, Tryptic, Zef Noise & Mike Ill (ex-Sweet Lizard Illtet), Silvia Orlandi, Angela Baraldi, Leonora, Roberto Tiranti and many others... Now, much to the anticipation of his fans and the music public at large, Cristiano has released a pioneering new album that takes the listener to uncharted sonic landscapes!

Says Cristiano, “I had wanted to dedicate myself completely to a solo album for some time now, totally free to go where I might, independent of market or stylistic pressures. A proverbial flight of fancy as it were. An album in which I could let my influences shine through without having to prove anything to anyone and one in which I didn't have to crank up the volume. AntiQua is a strange land where time flows at a more natural pace – I don't really know if it's on our planet, or even if it exists in the past, present or future, near or far... AntiQua manifests when we need it, every time we give in to dreams and forget about the daily grind. It is a goblet of wine in a candlelight tavern. It certainly did me a world of good, a brief trip to a land governed by antique ideals of beauty and harmony. I hope it may accompany the quietest and sweetest moments of your existence as it has mine.”

Cristiano's musical influences run far and wide: “Anthony Phillips, my master and above all a friend of mine, has taught me a lot about harmony and melody. But I am also influenced by Ennio Morricone, John Williams, Lyle Mays, Steve Hackett and obviously all the English classic prog of the 1970's”
Along with grand piano, synths, Mellotron and Hammond Organ, Cristiano plays 12-string, classical and electric guitar, among other instruments, on his new album. Along with Aldo Tagliapietra and Bernardo Lanzetti, the CD also boasts guest appearances by David Cremoni, Erik Montanari, Fabio Serra, Gigi Cavalli Cocchi, James Larcombe, Leonora and Mirko Tagliasacchi. Says Cristiano, “The enthusiasm of Bernardo Lanzetti! Like a child lost in toys when they hand him the music that I wrote in my room! And the furious quarrels due to precisely this enthusiasm that sometimes maybe I could not handle all of the energy that this great artist emanated from his ideas and visions. A great achievement writing for him. The peace and serenity that I got from Aldo Tagliapietra and his beautiful daughter Gloria. To see and hear Aldo singing your own song at home is like having the history in your hands that you model your own work of art and makes it grow to the point of becoming a masterpiece.”

In closing Cristiano has this to impart to his fans and listeners,“Approach this album without any anxiety, and desire to find deep researches in sounds electronics or modern crossover influences. 'AntiQua' is a tribute to the music and artists I love without any fear to sound or appear retro – so relax and enjoy it!”

New The Tangent Expected for Summer 2013

Le Sacre du Travail, The Tangent's seventh studio album, is expected to be released in the summer of 2013.

Ten years on from the debut album "The Music That Died Alone" THE TANGENT will release their 7th Studio Album "Le Sacre Du Travail" for Insideout Music in the summer of 2013. Their new album is an electric symphonia by Andy Tillison.
Inspired by Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite Of Spring", Tillison's look at the world he lives in 2013 is as usual pertinent, attacking, wistful and sometimes outright funny. "I have never had any desire to sing about The Hobbit. I live in a semi-detached house, near a little supermarket and a Comprehensive School" he says, "and the things I want to write about have always taken place in this world, be they for good or for ill. As for the band line-up, I'm just used to this flexibility now. Bob Fripp's had the same take on it since the 60s. I know how he must feel. However, the line-up for this album has offered me a chance to work with the best of the best. That's an inspiration in itself."
Returning guitarist/singer Jakko Jakszyk of King Crimson association and Level 42manship, already a veteran of 2 Tangent albums, joins up with Andy & Theo and the celebrated Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison. Jonathan Barrett loved by Tangent fans for his distinctive liquid fretless bass playing returns for a 3rd consecutive album with the band. As if that were not enough, this unit will be joined by David Longdon of Big Big Train who will be lending considerable vocal support to Andy - it's likely there will be three main vocalists on this album!Outlandishly Prog, full of orchestration and Hammond, this album dares to return to the idea that electric musicians with long hair can still stick fingers up at other musical establishments and knock out an album packed with content, melody, excitement and interest. "I knew Roine was right when he said we're "Back In The World Of Adventures" - That title remains an inspiration to me. Let's hope we can make this album just that."
THE TANGENT Members 2013:Andy Tillison, Theo Travis, Jakko Jakszyk, Gavin Harrison, Jonathan Barrett & David Longdon.

Amplifier Offer New Song Free on Signup

Twenty-four months after the release of their critically acclaimed third album The Octopus, Amplifier are back with a brand new album Echo Street – their first with the new four-piece line-up – and first for Kscope.

The band of Sel Balamir (guitars) and Matt Brobin (drums) re-emerge at the core of a very different animal – a four-piece line-up that has delivered a subtle shift in style allowing them to mix their epic space rock jams with accessible pieces boasting three-part vocal harmonies – sung by Sel, former Oceansize man Steve Durose (second guitar) and Alex "Magnum" Redhead (bass).

Echo Street opens with four vast epics Matmos, The Wheel, Extra Vehicular and Where The River Goes, and then shifts into more subtle and reflective territory; the haunting Paris In The Spring and the classy, CSN-like Between Today And Yesterday, the Floydian infinity of the title track Echo Street before ending on the anthemic and uplifting breeze of Mary Rose.

“We are extraordinarily pleased with Echo Street. We didn’t think that we could better The Octopus, but I think that Echo Street has a timeless quality about it. It’s probably the Amplifier album that most people will know with time. There’s something really special about it…” - Sel Balamir
Echo Street is now available to pre-order from the Kscope store. The album is available on CD, double vinyl and as a limited, deluxe two disc edition. The deluxe edition is packaged in a 60 page hardback book and also features the new Sunriders EP an additional record of new tunes, exclusive to this release.

Matmos, the album's opening track, is now available to download for free for all that sign up to the Amplifier mailing list. Go to http://kscope.bandcamp.com/track/matmos to download the track.

Renaissance to Release "Grandine il Vento"

Renaissance will soldier on with the release of their latest album Grandine il Vento and a tour to follow. Annie Haslam recently wrote on the band's Kickstarter webpage:

Dear Kickstarters:
We are finally in the last stages of preparing for the release of Grandine il Vento. Yes, it’s been a difficult few months; between Michael’s passing and my back injuries I can think of happier times.
We thank you for your patience through this very difficult time and want to send you a preview of Michael’s favorite track from the album, Cry to the World featuring Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson on flute! You can stream or download the complete track here.
We’ll update you on the date that you’ll be receiving the album as well as shipments of the other items included in your pledge. You will receive a survey form via Kickstarter soon to confirm your shipping address and for any other information we may need from you pertaining to your pledge.
We have lost Michael Dunford, but his incredible music lives on. As long as Renaissance keeps touring and fans keep loving our music, neither his spirit nor ours will ever wane.
All make-up dates for last fall's postponed shows are confirmed and listed on our tour information page.
Thank you again for making Grandine il Vento a reality.

RIP Ex-VdGG Bassist Nic Potter

British bassist, composer and painter, best known for his work with the group Van der Graaf Generator in the 1970s has died of complications brought about by pneumonia. Yesterday, Peter Hammill wrote of his longtime friend and collaborator with these simple words on his Sofa Sound website:

I'm so sorry to have to announce that the great Nic Mozart passed away in hospital last night. Deeply, deeply missed.

Nic Potter was the youngest member of Van der Graaf Generator and first appeared on the album The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other, as a replacement to Keith Ellis, at the insitance of drummer Guy Evans. He left VdGG halfway through the recording of H to He, Who Am the Only One. Still, Nic remained in contact with his ex-bandmates, often working on Peter Hammill's solo material. In 1977 he rejoined the band for the recording and touring of The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome. His live output with the band was immortalized on the double live-album Vital. He left the band, again, but continued work with Hammill through the 80s and 90s.

As a solo musician he recorded 9 albums, all of whom were remastered and re-released in 2009. He was also part of the short-lived ex-VdGG project The Long Hello.

He was admitted to University College Hospital in January 2013 suffering from pneumonia. He will be sorely missed, but his musical legacy will live on.

Steve Howe Leaves Asia's Legacy to Sam Coulton

Supergroup Asia have posted the following on their official website:
Steve Howe Departs From Asia
"ASIA announces that guitarist Steve Howe has relinquished his position in the band, in order to concentrate fully on his work on other projects. Steve said, "Myself and the band wish to thank their fans for the enthusiasm shown during the original members’ reunion. I will continue with Yes, and with my trio and solo guitar work. I wish my friends continued success".
In 2006 the original band reunited for a tour of USA, which was followed by four world tours and several continental tours. The reunited band has played over 300 shows and released three new studio albums, three DVDs and a number of live albums. The track ‘An Extraordinary Life’, from 2008’s album ‘Phoenix’ was chosen as the theme music for America’s Got Talent.
ASIA formed as a supergroup of stunning pedigrees, bringing together songwriter, lead vocalist and bassist John Wetton [King Crimson, UK], keyboardist Geoff Downes [Yes, The Buggles], drummer extraordinaire Carl Palmer [ELP] and Steve Howe [Yes]. Their self-titled debut album was the biggest selling album in the world in 1982 and monopolized the Number 1 slot in the Billboard charts for 9 weeks. The album is still in the top 3 Geffen sales of all time, with Guns ’n’ Roses and Whitesnake! With tracks like mega-hit ‘Heat Of The Moment’, ASIA helped to create the MTV phenomenon. The band’s work perfected the use of videos that encompassed stories and messages, examples being the work for ‘Wildest Dreams’, , ‘Only Time Will Tell’, ‘The Smile Has Left Your Eyes’ and ‘Don’t Cry’. ‘Heat Of The Moment’ is still a radio fixture and has been in top TV and films including ‘40 Year Old Virgin’, ‘South Park’, ‘Cold Case’, ‘The Matador’ and countless others.

The end of Steve’s time with the band marks the start of a new chapter for ASIA and a further announcement regarding new personnel, 2013 live appearances and new material is forthcoming."

ASIA Announce New Guitarist and 2013 Plans
"If 2012 was a year to remember for ASIA, with the release of the acclaimed studio album ‘XXX’ marking the band’s thirtieth anniversary, then 2013 is set to be another. John Wetton, Geoff Downes and Carl Palmer are delighted to announce that not only do they have an incredible talent in place to step into Steve Howe’s shoes, but also that their first international show with newcomer Sam Coulson will be a high profile performance at Sweden Rock 2013. Sam is a wonderful player, world-renowned amongst guitar virtuosos. Additionally, a new studio album, to be entitled ‘Valkyrie’, will be recorded for Frontiers Records during 2013 continuing the band’s relationship with the label.
John Wetton said, “ASIA is ready to take its next steps along this remarkable road. We cannot wait to perform again for the fans and also to unveil some of the new material, of which we are very proud”. Geoff Downes said, “We look forward to writing another chapter in Asia’s history”. Carl Palmer commented, “We’re all looking forward to the next decade of great ASIA music”.
With a new guitarist in place, Sweden Rock confirmed and more high profile live dates to come, plus a new album slated for release, the ASIA trajectory continues: onward and upwards!

Sidony Box Release New CD Recorded by Magma/Gong Legend Venux Deluxe

French avant garde music troupe Sidony Box have released their third album 'Sidony Box Rules'. Award-winner of the “Rezzo Jazz a Vienne 2010” showcase and selected for the AFIJMA's “Jazz Migration 2011” tour, Sidony Box has earned its scenic reoutation through Europe and already released two albums acclaimed by international press. Sidony Box is back on stage with a luminous and heavenly third album recorded by Venux Deluxe, well known for his work with legends such as Magma and Gong, taking the sound of the ensemble to a new plateau in sonic expression. This album installs the power jazz trio in the tradition of its illustrious elders, while keeping the devastating energy that made the initial force of the band.

The best way to present the music of this trio is probably to emphasize the state of mind in which it arose as well as its aspirations. Urgency and obviousness first characterize Sidony Box, which was created at the beginning of the summer 2009, not as a conceived project but more a happy consequence of an unpremeditated encounter. While the three musicians play for the first time together, a genuine sound and the will of a common musical direction intrude naturally. Far from the classically well-ordered styles, each individual of this band brings in its own musical identity to design rapidly a unique repertoire inspired by the contemporary world, blending with ease separate musical universes. From then on, extemporaneous feelings and a savant mixture of influences are expressed in the name of spontaneity. While guitarist Manuel Adnot's reference artists are numerous and eclectic such as Deftones, Happy Apple, Sigur Ros or Radiohead; drummer Arthur Narcy is an ardent trance and “working sound” devotee, and alto sax player Elie Dalibert is more anchored in the jazz tradition yet naturally open to all sound cultures. De facto present here and there, pop accents, metal, or noise are always underlain by an improvised speech which is the foundation of their pieces. Their only motto is to play totally. All in all the credo of the trio is to play the music of the moment rather than to lock itself in a definitive style. The pieces are most often collectively woven from a written pattern to a band composition in which three individualities blend to a unanimous speech, to the sound of the band.

Says guitarist Manu Adnot, “Our new release 'Sidony Box Rules' is the result of all our work since the band's birth in 2009. All music styles are played at their paroxysm: free jazz music, pop song. hardcore, electronics, post-rock... This is what we wanted when we started together; playing very different styles with only a trio formation, without bass. We looked also in a new way of thinking for us with more completely free improvisations; this time we really have left the things coming out naturally, and we took time to play again and again for getting out the best energy. This album is the results of all that; free way of thinking, free way of playing music, and a lot of pure emotion. Hope it will touch you too.”

Jolly to Release New Album on March 5

In the previous post I wrote about Jolly joining Riverside on their European and North American tours. Now we have news that, after all the problems this band has gone through this past year, they will release their highly anticipated follow-up to 2011's The Audio Guide to Happiness Part One.

Precisely two years after the release of part 1, The Audio Guide To Happiness (Part 2) has arrived and is set for a North American released date of March 5, 2013 via InsideOut Music. A list of European release dates can also be seen below.
In October 2012, Hurricane Sandy struck JOLLY hard, destroying drummer/producer Louis Abramson's home, which also functioned as the band's practice space and recording studio. All of Louis' possessions and a lot of the band's equipment were ruined. The members of JOLLY were devastated, and the timing couldn't have been worse, as the band was in the midst of finalizing The Audio Guide To Happiness (Part 2). In need of new equipment, JOLLY started a fundraising campaign and their incredible fans came through in a big way to help the band rebuild after this major disaster. Beyond the music, The Audio Guide To Happiness (Part 2) is a standing symbol of JOLLY's recovery from the storm.

"We couldn't be more excited to finally share The Audio Guide To Happiness (Part 2) with the world," comments the band. "After the devastation we experienced with Hurricane Sandy, we have been in a rebuilding phase, and the release of this album stands as a major milestone in our recovery. Musically, we set out to make Audio Guide 2 our richest sounding record, offering solid hooks, interesting arrangements and sonic textures that cover a wide range of styles. We're extremely proud of what we created. "

Even without considering the binaural brainwave technology embedded throughout, this album offers the listener an experience like no other. JOLLY pushes the limits of accessibility in The Audio Guide to Happiness (Part 2) with its powerful riffs, infectious hooks, and undeniable grooves, all within the context of their signature JOLLY atmosphere. Your first listen will leave you thinking, and your second will leave you a fan for life.

Tracklisting: The Audio Guide To Happiness (Part 2) Track List:
01. Guidance Three
02. Firewell
03. You Against the World
04. Aqualand and the 7 Suns
05. Dust Nation Bleak
06. Golden Divide
07. Guidance Four
08. Lucky
09. While We Slept in Burning Shades
10. Despite the Shell

Riverside Announce North American Dates

Poland's progressive rockers Riverside have released a music video for "Celebrity Touch," the first single off their highly-anticipated fifth studio album Shrine of New Generation Slaves

"'Celebrity Touch' reflects the times we live in," says Riverside's Mariusz Duda. "I think everyone has a deep need to feel important somehow, but unfortunately, this need is rarely satisfied. Of course some people do get the chance, mostly people connected with the so-called celebrity world. This is a story about someone who satisfied this feeling a bit too much and about the band that chose to play away from the galleries with shitty works."

Shrine of New Generation Slaves will be available in North America on February 5, 2013 via InsideOut Music. In support of the album, following a full European tour, Riverside will be playing a handful of shows in North America with label-mates Jolly.

Here is the promo video, directed by Mateusz Winkiel, followed by European and North American tour dates.
