Bigelf Announce Release of New Studio Album

It's been a long time coming, but Bigelf are at long last pleased to announce that they will release their brand new fourth studio album entitled Into The Maelstrom on the 4th of March 2014 throughout North America. Frontman and mastermind Damon Fox had this to say:
"I think ITM is the best Bigelf record yet and I believe it is a real game changer for the band. It's gonna put us over the top! Psychedelic cinematic landscapes and melodic prog-doom set the stage for the new album, I cannot wait for fans (old and new) to experience all of its apocalyptic color."

Into the Maelstrom marks the recording debut of Mike Portnoy (Transatlantic, The Winery Dogs) with Bigelf, whose Progressive Nation at Sea cruise the band will perform on from the 18th - 22nd February 2014, playing alongside bands such as Transatlantic, Devin Townsend Project, Riverside & Adrian Belew Power Trio. Tickets are available now from www.progressivenationatsea.com.

Look out for more information in the coming weeks!

Rare Brand X CDs To Be Released

Although typically considered an off-shoot band for Genesis legend Phil Collins, UK prog-fusion group Brand X was much more than that. Featuring several virtuosic musicians (as well as Collins), Brand X took the genre of fusion to a whole new level of expertise. Along with Collins on drums, the band featured Percy Jones (bass), John Goodsall (guitar) Robin Lumley (keyboards), and Morris Pert (percussion), with sometimes Mike Clark, Kenward Dennard (drums), and John Giblin (bass).

Active from 1975-1980, Brand X was another one of those bands who were beloved by other musicians, and the more discerning critics, but despite everything never had the commercial success they deserved. The band released several critically acclaimed albums on the Charisma label in the UK and Passport label in the US, including Unorthodox Behaviour, Moroccan Roll, Livestock and Product. Now much to the excitement of Brand X fans and fusion music fans worldwide, Gonzo Multimedia is releasing 3 rare Brand X titles on CD (Missing Period, Live at The Roxy LA 1979, Is There Anything About?), as well as bassist Percy Jones' hard to find solo offering from 1989 Cape Catastrophe.

Missing Period: This album represents the earliest known recordings of Brand X circa 1975-76. Recorded shortly before the group's debut album Unorthodox Behaviour, the source tapes for this material were recently recovered by John Goodsall from family members in England, who presented John with a box containing all sorts of Brand X memorabilia. At the bottom of the box were some old reels of tape of unknown origin. Upon review John and Percy realized that they had uncovered a long lost treasure – excellent quality recordings of Brand X's classic lineup performing previously unreleased material. This documents a period of the band's history which has been missing for over 20 years.

Live at The Roxy LA 1979: Recorded at the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles, CA on Sunday, September 23, 1979 shortly after the release of Product. This is a previously unreleased soundboard recording of Brand X captured live at the peak of the band's career.

Is There Anything About?: Not long after Brand X released their 1980 album Do They Hurt?, the band members went their separate ways (until their comeback in 1992 which only featured Goodsall and Jones). However, they still owed their record label one more album. The solution? Release a rarities album! The problem was that there was very little unreleased material in the vaults – about three or four tracks at the most. But with a little doctoring and remixing of tapes, keyboardist Robin Lumley extended that number to six tracks and the label released Brand X's appropriately-titled collection Is There Anything About? in 1982.

Cape Catastrophe: Several years after the release of Brand X's final album, bassist Percy Jones moved to New York City and began infiltrating the music scene there. He recorded Cape Catastrophe in 1988/89 at a studio in East Harlem. Using an array of hardware and instruments available at the time, including a Casio synthesizer, Roland sequencer. Yamaha drum machine and Korg digital delay, Percy recorded a several tracks ranging in length from 2-and-a half minute to 23minutes.

Says music writer Dave Lynch, “There is certainly a lot here for electric bass-aholics to enjoy: Jones' burbles, pops, and plonks are all here, and his tone on sustained notes is rich with harmonic overtones as expected. But the music through which the bass slips and slides is often more like twisted instrumental techno-funk than fusion, along with ominous electronic textures that sometimes sound like an ethereal chorus or gruff, agitated shouts distorted beyond recognition.” Gonzo Magazine's Jon Downes adds, “Jones composed everything on the album himself, except for the closing number. The album is a peculiar, though satisfying mix of jazz fusion and electronica, and is another one of those classic albums that slipped through the cracks at the time, which is just unfair.”

RIP Dave Kulju (1970-2013)

I have just learned of the passing of a great musician. Multi-instrumentalist Dave Kulju is not a household name, but his music has touched me like no other, and I have had the pleasure of introducing his "oeuvre" to listeners through my humble radio show. His music, mostly instrumental, was magnificiently constructed and nuanced.

I discovered his music by browsing the internet and stumbling on his website. I immediately bought Notes in the Margin after hearing a sample, finding the mix of his music and with lyrics by Australian poetess Amanda Joy sublime. Dave would have turned 44 this coming January. He was working on a new project and had posted some samples on his website. It sounded promising, even surpassing some of the music already out there.

I invite listeners and visitors to this website to keep his music alive by visiting his website and purchasing his music. A great musician is gone, but his music will live on.

North Atlantic Oscillation's Sam Healy Releases Solo Project

North Atlantic Oscillation are currently hard at work on their third album, which is scheduled for release in 2014. Meanwhile, the band's vocalist Sam Healy has released Sand, his debut solo album, on NAO's label Kscope.

NAO fans will recognise elements of the Sand sound (including the vocals, of course!) but there are marked differences too. The solo record "has a more intimate and personal feel" than the band's material, Sam says.

Sand has already received high praise from fans and critics (including an unprecedented 10 out of 10 from Phill Hall of Borderline Press) and is featured on Kscope's latest podcast: http://www.kscopemusic.com/2013/12/02/2823/

Christiaan Bruin's The Black Codex in 2014

Christiaan Bruin (Sky Architect, Chris, Nine Stones Close) announces a musical series The Black Codex, starting January the 5th 2014.

Having just released his latest album Chris - Days Of Summer Gone and the new Sky Architect album, Christiaan Bruin is back with a brand new ambitious project: a 1-year musical series: The Black Codex.

Its concept is a unique one: during the course of a whole year, subscribers receive by email, a newly composed and recorded piece of music every week, together with illustrated lyrics, drawings, and many other bonus features. These weekly episodes will culminate in one epic storyline, with many characters, intrigues, adventures and much more.

"The Black Codex can be compared to a TV-series with weekly episodes, but in this case the story is told through music, lyrics and illustrations. Each week there will be lots of surprises, but also an element of familiarity and continuity. Musically, there's lots of freedom and room for spontaneity.

There's certainly a very adventurous journey ahead, as this has never been attempted before in a similar way, and this is my most ambitious project to date. It's like a concept album-deluxe." - Christiaan

Christiaan Bruin is a young dutch composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer. Since 2009 he has released five albums with his solo-project Chris.

He is also a founding member of the progressive rock band Sky Architect, which has recorded three albums since 2010. Furthermore he is a member of the avant-garde metal band Adeia, the progressive rock band Nine Stones Close and the cinematic pop orchestra Mayra Orchestra.
Watch the trailer:

The Black Codex will take off on 5 January the 2014, and continue for the rest of 2014.

Membership costs are 4 euro each month.

Marillion's Steven Rothery Kickstarts Solo album

After putting together a band to play the Plovdiv Guitar Festival, Steven Rothery has finally decided to record a solo album. As the Marillion guitarist wrote today (November 25th) on his band's website:

A very exciting day for me today and not just because it's my birthday ;-)  After twenty eight years of talking about doing a solo album, the time has finally arrived! Today is the official launch day of the Kickstarter campaign for my solo album The Ghosts of Pripyat.
Earlier this year I was invited to play at the annual Plovdiv guitar festival in October 2013. To prepare I got together with my good friend and fellow guitarist Dave Foster for a couple of writing sessions which went incredibly well. After a couple of days rehearsal with the rhythm section of Leon Parr and Yatim Halimi I realised this was going to be something very special. This Youtube trailer from the live video of the performance gives you an idea of where the finished album, The Ghosts of Pripyat, will go.

The audio download of the festival is available at http://steverothery.com/ and the video download at http://steverothery.fetchapp.com/sell/eizeetip

The album will also feature a guest performance from Steve Hackett on a track called Morpheus and another track titled The Old Man of the Sea. Lasse Hoile (of Porcupine Tree fame) is designing the artwork so it's going to visually stunning as well.

Steven is hoping to get £15,000 by January 22, 2014 to push the project along, and as of 10:00 AM EST today it already is up to 8,644 out of 284 backers, so it looks like it will be a success.

Add your pledge to this Kickstarter campaign by going to Steven's Kickstarter page here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2090204348/steve-rothery-the-ghosts-of-pripyat. Many pledge bundles are available.

UPDATE (26th November 2013):
By the end of the evening, the Kickstarter campaign had reached its goal, and then some. Inside of one day, the amount accumulated was £20,529, with 694 backers. This is the quickest campaign I have ever seen! Steven Rothery, whose birthday it was when he launched the campaign, had one hell of a gift, and had this to say:

Thank you all for your incredible support! What an amazing way to celebrate my birthday yesterday.
(...)
Mike Hunter will be engineering the recording of the drums for the album at the Racket Club at the beginning of February and Steve Hackett will be recording his parts towards the end of the month.
We'll be flying over to Italy to play a couple of shows with Ranestrane on the 21st and 22nd February, more details to follow.
Thanks again, Steve

Pallas Reveal New Album and Crowdfunding

A new Pallas album will be released in April/May 2014. The new album is to be called wearewhowere and they are currently seeking contributions through the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo to complete its recording. Think of it as a preorder directly from the makers and cutting out the middle men!

As usual in these crowdfunding deals, they have a range of exciting perks ranging from getting your name or even face in the album credits and artwork to joining the band in the recording studio to record a track with them!

Go to the special campaign headquarters at Indiegogo here Pallas Crowdfunding Link.

Now, crowdfunding is something of a hit or miss. In some cases it works spectacularly (the Subterranea movie is an exemple of this, as is the one by Edison's Children), sometimes it doesn't get the attention it deserves (as was the case with the recent try by Solstice Coil).

So to raise awareness of this campaign Pallas are giving away a free download, not only of the "PreMix- MegaMix" of four new tracks, but also a video plus other goodies such as artwork wallpaper! You can get this download from their Bandcamp site here: Free Download Link.

And while you're there, you can purchase and download The Sentinel Pre-mixes, Demos of intended studio albums, and long out-of-print live albums, now made available at reasonable prices. It's a great way of encouraging the band until the release of this new album.

Heliopolis Announce Debut Album

Put former members of acclaimed progressive rock bands Gabble Ratchet, Mars Hollow and Ten Jinn in a room together and what do you get? Heliopolis (“City of the Sun” in Greek), a most appropriate moniker for a band based out of the sunny climes of Los Angeles.

The band was formed by Jerry Beller (drums) and Kerry Chicoine (bass) in September 2012 after the dissolution of their former band, Mars Hollow. The quintet is rounded out by virtuoso keyboardist Matt Brown, guitarist Michael Matier, and vocalist Scott Jones.
Heliopolis have played a string of acclaimed gigs on the West Coast ranging from Berkeley, CA (with MoeTar) to Mexicali Prog (with Italy’s Il Castle di Atlante), as well as shows in Santa Monica and Los Angeles; the band’s most recent appearance was at the second annual Nor Cal Prog Festival (featuring Moraine, Erik Norlander and Inner Ear Brigade).

The debut album “City of the Sun” is produced by David Morse (Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Van Halen), and engineered by John Prpich (Juice Newton, Led Zepagain); the album is scheduled for release in early 2014 on an as yet to be determined record label. Chicoine states, “The Heliopolis mission is to build upon the foundations established by our previous musical experiences in an attempt to take the music into uncharted sonic waters with an emphasis on melody, composition and improvisation, and to bring the music alive onstage with energy and passion.

David Gilmour Working on New Album

Is this rumour true? It seems so since there are two confirmed quotes about it. First guitar tech Phil Taylor in an interview on effectrode.com said that David was happy with his new Helios guitar effects pedal, and that he wanted one more for next week to add to the control room set up before David started recording.

Then in an interview with vintage.tv, Graham Nash said, "I’m leaving here and taking the train to Brighton to go and sing with David Gilmour on his new record."

Both David Crosby and Nash sang on David Gilmour’s last project On An Island. They now seem to be lending their vocal talent on David Gilmour’s new project. If this project becomes a CD, it will be Gilmour's 4th solo studio album.

Shadow Circus & Edensong Live

The NJ Proghouse's Progressive Music Series presents Shadow Circus and Edensong as a double bill on Sunday November 17th.

I have never seen Shadow Circus live, but I have loved and played their music on the radio show. I discovered Edensong while at the Terra Incognita Prog Festival and fell in love with their music then and there. Both bands were interviewed here on the radio show, and both bands are worth the detour to see live.

Shadow Circus have recently released their third album called On a Dark and Stormy Night, based on a story called A Wrinkle in Time. The music is lush and another step up from their wonderful previous releases. Edensong are putting the finishing touches on their second album, to be released.... when they finish it! Their first album is simply wonderful, as is the EP they released in 2010.

Both bands will be playing on the 17th of November at Roxy and Duke's in New Jersey. The show is only 15$ if you buy tickets before the 17th, and 20$ at the door. And if that isn't enough you will also get a free single from Shadow Circus.

Be there and enjoy the music!

745 Bound Brook Rd,
Dunellen, NJ, USA

Doors open at 5 PM. Shows start at 6 PM.

Sky Architect Return with New Album on Nov. 4

Two years after their ambitious A Dying Man's Hymn, Sky Architect are now back with their highly anticipated third album titled A Billion Years of Solitude. Prepare for a launch into space. Prepare for wormholes. Prepare for planet eaters, supernovae, and lots of unexpected twists and turns. This time heavily inspired by the vintage science fiction classics, Sky Architect boldly venture into new territories, once again proving themselves to be pioneers within the genre.

On A Billion Years of Solitude, Sky Architect have challenged themselves more than ever before. In every step in the process, including the cover artwork, the band have taken full creative control. The result: a stunning outburst of creativity, featuring typical Sky Architect elements such as surprising changes, crazy rhythmic devices, polyphonic arrangements and extensive song structures. Fans of Gentle Giant, The Flower Kings, Beardfish and Pain of Salvation take note!

Sky Architect is a young Rotterdam-based band that evolved from a three-piece called Seraphine, consisting of Wabe, Christiaan and Rik, formed in 2008 at the Rotterdam Conservatory. A year later, Guus and Tom joined and the rest, as they say, is history. Since then, two albums (Excavations of the Mind, A Dying Man’s Hymn) were released to critical acclaim. Christiaan is also well-known and highly acclaimed in the scene under his solo moniker Chris. In their short history, they have already played on such esteemed festivals as Night of the Prog, ProgPower and Terra Incognita, sharing the stage with luminaries such as Dream Theater, Riverside and The Tangent.

A Billion Years of Solitude will be released by Galileo Records on November 4th.

Track list:
1. The Curious One (18:06)
2. Wormholes (The Inevitable Collapse of the Large Hadron Collider) (5:52)

Crowd-Funding Solstice Coil's 3rd Album

Solstice Coil is a progressive rock band formed in Israel in late 2001. They've released two self-produced studio albums in 2005 and 2011. You might have heard of them through their Dream Theater Parody, or maybe you saw them play live at the 2006 Prog Resiste Convention or on their 2012 tour in India. Maybe you know of them after having heard a track or two on this radio show. Or maybe you just know them because you know them. Or maybe you don't know them at all!

You can listen to them on Bandcamp, Youtube and their offical website. They are also on Facebook, Twitter, and pretty much every other social media platform out there.

For their third album, which is announced to be more epic in nature compared to their previous albums, they've decided to record all of the instruments and vocals in a professional studio to get that "big sound", instead of recording only some tracks in the studio and some in their home studio like they did on their previous albums.

Now they need your help. Your funding will allow then to hire a graphic artist to design the album's cover art, get the album professionally mastered and most importantly, print CDs rather than go with a digital release only. In order to achieve all of the above they need to raise $6,000.

Unfortunately I got the news about this a bit late, and there are only 62 hours left to the Indigogo crowd-funding page left to attain that goal, with,as of this writing, $1,727 already pledged. Pretty good deals are to be had ($6 for the CD and the download, $80 puts your name in the booklet, $250 puts your own voice on the album!!). 4, 000 to go, and even though  it looks like a lost cause, it's been done before - the crowd-funding for the Subterranea movie being one exemple.

So I invite you to go now and pledge: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/solstice-coil-s-3rd-album

UPDATE: Solstice Coil have unfortunately not met their crowd-funding goal. Still, they promise to record a new album, albeit not with the producer or in the studio that was their first choice. The next album will also not be available on CD, but as a downloadable album, probably through iTunes and through their website.
