It Was an Old Year Yesterday...

...But it's a New Year Now!

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great Christmas and a happy New Year's Eve. As for me, I had a wonderful time, if tiring, visiting family and having family and friends over for the holidays, and having turkey only once (yesterday we served some).

2011 was a fantastic year for prog. Statistically speaking this year had over 1161 releases (studio, live, singles, and DVD combined) of which I heard about 475 (not all of them good). That makes for a lot of listening. No wonder I didn't have the time to write reviews this year. But I did play most of those on the radio show.

2012 annouces itself as a great year for prog, with the long awaited release of the Chris Squire/Steve Hackett project Squackett, the long awaited return of polish band SBBthe new Landmarq release Entertaining Angels, a new Gazpacho CD titled March of Ghosts, a new Delusion Squared called II, the new Steve Hogarth and Richard Barbieri collaboration Not The Weapon But The Hand, a new Pendragon DVD called Out of Order Comes Chaos, Threshold's March of Progress CD, and maybe, just maybe, the new Echolyn.

Well this is it, the last IPRS of 2011. But that doesn't mean there aren't more CDs from 2011 that I've yet to play. In fact, there are still releases that I am eagerly awaiting, like the new Paul Cusick CD. Today's radio show was supposed to be a Christmas special, but with so many new releases this year, I just couldn't pass up playing some more of them.

The IPRS will return around the 16th of January 2012 with new music and interviews. don't forget to send me your Top 10 of 2011 via e-mail (progrockshow(at)hotmail.com). On this week's show, more new releases! But first, the big news this past week was the announcement that Nick D'Virgilio was leaving Spock's Beard. This is the second major defection from this great band. This first, when Neal Morse left the music business, albeit temporarily, was akin to Peter Gabriel leaving Genesis. Nick came out from behind the drums, as did Phil Collins, to take over the vocal duties. Now, Nick has left, but his reasons are sensible, and it is without accrimony. Read more on his website. I wish Nick well in his future endeavors, and wish the rest of the Beard well in theirs.

With the coming of the first snow here in Montreal comes the new Kate Bush CD aptly named "50 Words for Snow". It is a wonderful album, and musically it is much more stripped down than what we had been used to by Kate. The consumate artist, Kate Bush has given us wonderful music through all these years, and today she brings us on a musical journey through snow covered landscapes.

After an absence of 8 years, Hungarian band After Crying has now released "Creatura", a wonderfully complexe album which I hope you will like. With four parts, each starting with the same leitmotiv, each song is titled on one of the cardinal points.

The Stevegane Project is the first CD by Pascal Stevegane, a french guitarist which shows a lot of promise as a solo artist. He says his influences are Pink Floyd, Yes, Rush, and Rainbow, but I feel his music is more in the vein of Mike Oldfield, in that it is richly textured and the guitar plays an important part. A great beginning.

As for the other artists featured today, Knight Area, Landscape, and The Psychedelic Ensemble, I'll have more to say later. As for The Anabasis, I refer you to the progmistress's review (click on one of the blogs I follow).

BTW, if you are living in the Montreal or Toronto area, Sun Domingo will be coming to town during the first week of December. Sun Domingo, as you all should know, is the band that has been opening for Marillion at most Weekends these past few years, and they are scheduled to open for Marillion on their North American tour next year. Now is your chance to see a whole Sun Domingo show, as headliners, playing their latest album, the excellent Songs for End Times, and playing the whole of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. This is a show not to be missed.

Hello dear listeners. This week's radio show devotes itself to live releases. Usually I don't play live releases on the IPRS, devoting most of the 3 hour show to recent studio releases, but a lot of great sounding live releases have come out recently, or which the new Unitopia CD (and DVD, which is a must buy) One Night in Europe, chronicling the band's first european tour. Also, the Peter Gabriel New Blood CD and DVD which, regardless of what some think of his studio effort "Scratch My Back", brings new life, thus New Blood, to his musical legacy. Some artists do the "unplugged" album with acoustic equivalents to their usual instruments, as Marillion does on the "Live from Cadogan Hall", other use the full force of an acoustic orchestra, which Gabriel chose to magnificent effect.

Speaking of symphonic, The Enid released Live at the Town Hall earlier this year, and my hope is that they release a recording of their own concert using a symphony orchestra. If their ever was one band who's style is perfectly adapted for this treatment, it's The Enid.

And on the "When is it too much" front, all members, save one, of Transatlantic have had live releases this year, either with their own bands or with the aforementioned super group: the Flower Kings, Marillion, Spock's Beard, Neal Morse, and... Transatlantic themselves. With an aptly titled "More Is Never Enough", they release yet another live album (with DVD) of their last tour, and this time it's two different shows with two different vibes. Hopefully this one, though good, is enough... for now.

Hello dear listeners. Last Friday's radio show is now available to download for those of you who are unable to listen to the radio show live on UK70sProgRock, and for those of you who wish o listen to it again.

The big news today that I didn't touch on during the radio show, since I learned about it after the show, is that EMI music has been purchased by Universal Music Group and Sony Corp. How is it important for us as prog fans? Well a lot of great prog bands started on EMI (or Harvest, which was a subsiduary of EMI), like Marillion, Pallas, and of course Pink Floyd. They were also the home of The Beatles! At one point in the 80s EMI was instrumental in the revival of prog, what we now call the Neo-Prog movement, by signing bands that had a certain following at the Marquee and elsewhere around the UK. Of course, as with any corporate music business, they dumped a lot of bands for lack of sales, but that is the nature of the music business... business!! They usually go where the winds of money go. Anyway, how will that affect us prog fans? Well, not much since most of the back catalogues have been sold with the company. Most of the profits from the recently released (and forthcoming releases) of the Pink floyd catalogue will go to the new Universal/Sony alliance. As for bands who still don't own the full rights to their own songs? I don't know exactly how that affects them... how that affects their future purchasing of their own rights. I will try and find out!

One last thing: next week's radio show will last 4 hours, and will concentrate on the live releases of 2011.

IPRS 93 Ready for Download

Hello dear listeners! First, a bit of news on the Prog front. Having announced their first North american tour since 2004 last week, Marillion tickets have now gone on sale in certain cities. Grab them while you can, I have a feeling they will sell like hot cakes! They have also announced that the setlists will change from show to show, some times even drastically, so that fans that didn't get a chance to see them live in a long while will at least get a taste of their large back catalogue of songs. That slo means that real fans who go to two or more shows will at least hear different songs from one show to the next. I guess that they will make these live shows available to purchase throught their website as they did for the Less Is More and the Happiness tours, although that has not been confirmed.

As I mention during the radio show, this year has been a year of plenty when it comes to prog releases of quality, making it really really difficult to choose a Record of the Year. A lot of CDs are in my top of the year, more than 10... even more than 20 I consider must buys for any prog fan, a sampling of which you can hear on today's download. So this year I have decided that I won't make a distinction between the number 1 and the number 20 on my Top 20 list of 2011 that will be broadcast in January. Instead it will be titled "The Top CDs that everyone should have in his collection". That doesn't stop anyone from making a top 10 or top 20 list of their favorites of the year and send them to me. As with years past, I will compile a list from the listeners choices and play those songs on a special "Listener's Choice" radio show that will preceed my own list. So get going and send me your choices even though the year hasn't ended (You can ammend your list later).

Hello everyone. The latest radio show, number 92, is now available for you to download. On this special show I have the great pleasure to speak with Guy Manning about his forthcoming release "Margaret's Children", a follow-up of sorts to his 2006 release "Anser's Tree".

Following the lives of 7 descendents of Margaret Montgomery, the album takes us on a journey through time, recounting the important moments in the lives of Margaret's descendants. These stories are enhanced with music that recall the times and places through which the characters evolve. A worthy follow-up to Anser's Tree, important moments from the last four hundred years are brilliantly examined, not in a didactic way, but strangely in a way that is also a reflection of our current worldwide situation.

Guy has some wonderful insights about this album, and I hope you like the interview... and the songs. About the songs: I only played three from the forthcoming release, a taster if you will, but I added songs from throughout his carreer (well from the albums I do own - I don't have all his CDs unfortunately). The release date is November 7th, and you can pre-order the album at Guy Manning's website.

IPRS #91 Ready for download

This week, a lot of new music. I was pleasantly surprised to receive the new Shadow Circus single this week. It's their first release since the excellent "Shadows & Screams", an album that received considerable airplay on my show, and it doesn't disappoint. I decided to play the shorter song, simply to give you a taste, but the second track, Rise, is a small epic, well worth picking up.

Lithuanian band The Skys just released their new album Colors of the Desert and it also is an excellent release. On the less complex side of the prog spectrum, it nonetheless holds beautiful songs with great melodies. Welsh band Magenta also just released their new CD Chameleon. With great songs, and the beautiful voice Christina, Magenta delivers an album, if not full of surprises, at least consistent with their recent releases. As for Airbag's sophomore album, All Rights Removed, it is a much better album than their previous one, which is saying something since "Identity" was excellent.

Other notable releases: The Mercury Tree's Pterodactyls is great, and Matt Stevens' guitar work on "Relics" is flabergasting! Pandora's Sempre e Ovunque is great Italian prog and Majestic, with a three song CD, each over 10 minutes long, delivers a great album with a classic sound. Sweden's Simon Says released a compilation album of songs that mostly appeared on "Various Artists"' albums over the years.

Lastly, Peter Gabriel's New Blood has undeservedly received some negative reviews. Some have said that "Gabriel covers Gabriel badly", but I have that, contrary to his previous covers album "Scratch My Back", this album keeps the spirit and mood of the original songs. Gabriel's voice, as always distinctive, is put front and center, not buried by a band, and the emotions are felt even more profoundly in these versions. Another Saturday, another IPRS download. This time I cover the Summer's End Festival. Every year this festival attracts bands and fans from all over the world, and this year has certainly not been a disapointment. Of course, we all heard about the bands that were supposed to come and couldn't (Unto Us, K2, Amplifier, most of the members of Sunchild). They were missed, and for most of them it's only a matter of time before they do come to Summer's End, but this year's lineup was excellent.

So to give you a taste of what happend in that small area of England called Lydney, here is a sampling of the artists that did make it, that is all but Concrete Lake, of which I have no recordings. And to top it all off, my friend Peter O'Neill, who has been a Summer's End regular for years, has agreed to do interviews for this radio show. He did a great job, and got to talk to great artists after their shows: Dec Burke, Atony Kalugin, Andy Tillison, and members of Concrete Lake. the sound is a bit raw, and I do apoligize for that, but since the interviews are interesting, I decided it was better to present them than not.

Hello friends and listeners. These past few weeks have been a boon for prog music lovers, with the new Steve Hackett, Agents of Mercy, Steven Wilson, Pink Floyd, Subsignal, Sunchild, and Jelly Fiche albums all available for purchase. for your listening pleasure, many of those new releases are featured in today's radio show. The new Manning album is also coming up, and I have been lucky enough to hear the new album. Hello dear listeners, glad to see you here again. This week on the International Prog Rock Rock are a lot of new releases, and some forthcoming ones, most of them double CDs... or more. Let's start with Steve Hackett. His new CD, Beyond the Shrouded Horizon, is available as a one CD or two CD set, and it came out this week. Steven Wilson's Grace for Drowning also came out this week and I only saw it as a two CD set at a very resonable price, really worth it for any music fan. Polish band Millenium's newest output, Puzzles, is also a double album.

But I must say that the winner this week is Pink Floyd. The newly remastered Dark Side of the Moon comes in multiple configurations.First there is the single CD of the Remastered album, then the double CD version, called the Experience version, with the live show taken from the 16 November 1974 Empire Pool show. The single CD version is also available in the Discovery boxset, which includes all 14 Pink Floyd albums. And last, but certainly not least, is the Experience boxset. This last one includes 6 disks, 3 CDs, 2 DVDs, and one BlueRay (and a lot of collectibles that are, quite frankly, not essential). I am quite thrilled at having this version of DSotM, since it includes 2 5.1 mixes and the original Quadrophonic mix from 1974.

As for the other bands featured today: Greylevel, a Canadian band, is great; Anubis's sophomore CD, A Tower is Silence, is even better than their first CD; Myrath's third output is a bit ahrder edged and very enjoyable; and White Willow's newest was worth the wait! Hope you like them and run to your nearest reseller to purchase them.

Next week's show will be a recap of the Summers' End festival being held this weekend in England. I'll have a special guest commenting on the shows, and hoefully talking with some of the bands.

Most interesting, for me, means that the song isn't a note for note copy of the original. Hello dear listeners! Yesterday's IPRS, the one that aired on UK70s Prog Rock, is now available for download for those of you that prefer listening to the radio show through your iPods or any other listening device you own. I am pressed for time today, so the post will be short, but let me talk a bit about the featured album from this week's show.

Most of the time I receive CDs from the bands or from the distributors, or I simply buy the CDs through my favorite Cd shop. I review these CDs (I know, I know, I'm abit late in posting these reviews, but don't worry, they will come), and choose some of the best songs, in my opinion, to play on the radio show. But I also visit the web, especially a website called bandcamp, and just listen to what is new and upcoming. This week I discovered this new artist through this aforementioned website.

Bader Nana is an musician born in Lebanon and now based in Kuwait, not exactly Prog havens or the usual places where you figure prog will flourish. But give the music a chance and you will discover a rich and interesting artist that has a great future in the prog world, and a CD that will be a great addition to your music library. Wormwood is the name of the CD, and the songs relate a story. Of course, for people that know a bit about the bible, Wormwood is the name of a star that falls on the Earth, as told in the book of Revelations, but it also is a term used whn there is a nuclear accident, and this is the theme of the CD.

This CD won't disapoint, and it's free on Bader Nana's bandcamp site (at least for now). I don't know how Bader intends to make money out of this (I will try to contact him for an interview), buit I do hope that he starts charging soon and be rewarded by the fruit of his labout for this wonderful album.

Here at IPRS Central it was a sad week. Coming back from a beautiful weekend in the mountains north of Montreal, I heard the news Neil Pepper, a friend of this show, had lost his battle with cancer. For the past two years he fought valiantly, keeping us posted through his Facebook page, he continued recording with his band Galahad, and he never lost hope. That is why the first hour of this week's show is dedicated to him. I would especially like to thank Dean "Deano" Baker, keyboardist of Galahad for mixing 2 songs especially for the IPRS, and the members of Galahad and Josephine Pepper, for allowing me to play these songs on this radio show.

As for the rest of the radio show, I showcase more recently released music. Two of them, the new Opeth and the new Dream Theater, are real surprises for me. Let me elaborate.

Opeth have never really been my cup of tea. Some of their music I really enjoy, while the whole "death grunts" period... well let's just say I can do without it. But this latest release shows a maturity and a thoughtfulness I never would have imagined. Obviously I cannot claim to know all of their music, but from what I have heard I can affirm that "Heritage" is the album that will open them up to a whole new audience, like myself.

As for the latest Dream Theater, this is a band that I have been following for quite a while. I must first say that I am a fan of Mike Portnoy. He is an incredible drummer, very inventive, on par with Neil Peart, and a very nice guy. Even his side-projects were interesting (Transatlantic, OSI, etc.). When he was fired by the band he helped create the news was devastating. Some people vowed never to listen to DT ever again. Well, these same people might have to re-assess their position! The new CD, "A Dramatic turn of Events" is everything we came to love about Dream Theater. While the last few releases were technically marvellous, musically it seemed that they had lost their steam. Well this new release is a return to form, and the new drummer, Mike Mangini, really is up to the task.

Both these CDs will be released next week, so go ahead and purchase them, they are both worth it.

Their headline spot has been taken by Sweden's Freak Kitchen. Itpromises to be a fantastic weekend of prog music, as always.

In other news, Ian Andersonhas announced on the Jethro Tull website that he will be touring the Thick As ABrick album starting in April 2012 to celebrate its 40th anniversary. I haven'tread anywhere in the official press releases that the whole Tull band will beperforming, but one can surely wish!

Grand Return from Summer Vacation with Show 83

Boy, you go away for two weeks on vacation and the whole world goes topsy-turvy: riots in the UK, the US is downgraded, and now hurricane Irene threatens the north american eastern coast (where I was 'til a couple of days ago on vacation...).

At least we still have good music to listen too and to discover, and this week, as I come to the end of my second year hosting this radio show, I have a lot of new music by very interesting young bands as well as a few classic prog bands, starting with a teaser from Steven Wilson's forthcoming Grace For Drowning CD and closing with a revisited classic album by the band that created it: the Strawb's Hero & Heroine "à la mode" of 2011. In between we will discover bands from the UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

IPRS #82 Ready to Download

This first radio show of August has a good selection of new releases by a variety of bands. First off is Fair to Midlan, an american band that was introduced to me by my good friend Andrew Wood (whom you might remember from last week's High Voltage re-cap special). Arrows & Anchors is their 4th release, a reviews are pretty positive.

Next up is argentinian band Uranian. How I came to discover this band is a funny story, one which I talk about during the radio show so I won't repeat it here. Suffice it to say that reviews of their first CD, three songs of which are played here, are overwhelmingly positive, and I add my own 5 stars to this excellent release.

Sweden's Wolverine has released their 4th CD this year, and at it's release I played only one song off of it. I remedy the situation by playing two more from this excellent prog metal band.

Germany's Shades of Dawn have also released their 4th CD, and Frequency Drift, also from Germany, have recently released their 3rd. Graffiti's Rainbow is Shades of Dawn's first ever epic track, clocking at 25 minutes. Frequency Drift, whose first two releases I absolutely loved, have had some personel changes, and Ghosts, this latest release, reflect that.

Three years after the "Who's the Boss in the Factory?", Sweden's Karmakanic comes back with "In a Perfect World", an excellent release from this Flower Kings offshoot. As for british guitarist Liam Davison of Mostly Autumn, "A Treasure of Well-Set Jewels" is his first solo release, and a great release it is. Very melodic with well written songs.

American band Circa's third release "And So On" (if you don't count "Overflow" which was release only thru iTunes) sounds like an offshoot of Yes, which they are. In fact, they continue in the tradition of the Yes album "Open Your Eyes" on which Billy Sherwood played guitars and keyboards.

Alternativ Quartet's second release "Aripi" is an excellent example of Eclectic Prog. This romanian band has many influences ranging from a classic space rock kind of atmospheres, with a modern, Tool-like sound, and a post-metal songwriting style. An excellent sophomore release.

Portugal's Daymoon is an unsigned band wich deserves greater airplay. Their first release "All Tomorrows" has excellent musicianship and interestingly complex music. This is a very interesting band that shows a lot of promise. And for 1 euro, this album it is truely a steal.

Hello Proggers! In this latest IPRS, my good friend Andrew Barnsley Wood sent his comments about last week's high Voltage Festival. Andrew went to the pre-show on Friday, and then spent the whole of Saturday on site. His views on what he saw and heard are a good indication of how the day went - from strength to strength.

In the second part of the show, I offer an interview I did with Mark Trueack of Unitopia. Radio Show 79 Ready for Download

The latest edition of the International Prog Rock Show has aired today on UK70s Prog Rock. Unfortunately it aired an hour later than scheduled. This was beyond my control, and I hope that listeners didn't mind hearing the end of the Keith Emerson Band live in Moscow before my show aired (I certainly didn't mind hearing Tarkus live again).
This week the featured band is Lazuli, a French band in the Eclectic Prog genre. Their latest release, 4603 Battements (meaning 4603 Beats), has enchanted me. From the opening clock sounds of "(", followed by the unrelenting "Je te laisse ce monde", with chords that resemble Genesis' Tonight Tonight Tonight, to "Festin ultime" wich ends with a reprise of "Je te laisse ce monde" in the form of the closing parenthesis ")", this whole album is a must for any prog fan. All the songs are sung in french, obviously, but this shouldn't scare off fans who don't understand the language.

This is not to mean that the other bands featured here are not worthy of your attention.

My friend Truey of Unitopia has, with his band, just complete the mix of their latest output, a DVD of their show of 15 October 2010 at the Boerderij, in Zoetermeer, The Netherlands. IPRS 77 - Canada Day Special

Since today is July 1st, Canada Day, I decided to showcase canadian prog rock bands on the International Prog Rock Show which aired on UK 70s Prog Rock. Of course our greatest export and most recognisable prog rock band may be Rush, who are still on their Time Machine tour as I write. I even think they are better known than another canadian export of ours, the Cirque du Soleil. Another well known canadian prog band is Saga, who have now embarked on a summer tour in Europe. Michael Sadler, as most of you know, has returned to the fold, and Rob Moratti, who replaced him as lead singer for about two years, has just released his first solo CD.

Today's show is just a sampling of the great music created in Canada, from long gone bands like Maneige, to up-and-coming new bands like It, Mystery, and Half Past Four. I regularly play music by canadian bands, recently having done a special with music by Tempus Fugit, another up-and-coming band, so today I concentrated on bands I haven't played in a long while, or even haven't played at all, except for those bands who just released new CDs.

On a sad note, Alberto Bonomi from the italian jazz fusion band D.F.A., died tragically in a car accident near his home in Verona. Even though the band had called it quits due to personal reasons, this is sad news indeed. In honor of Alberto, you will hear one of his compositions taken from the last D.F.A. cd, 4th.

In an attempt to showcase new and unknown bands in the prog world, the last couple of radio shows have concentrated on latest releases. This latest show is no different. I was supposed to have an interview with members of Sky Architect, but scheduling problems arose (them being on tour), and time differences (I being in North America, them being in Europe, interview could only be conducted on weekends to be able to do them at convenient times for both of us). Anyway, I still hope to bring you an interview with this wonderful band in the near future. Another interview in the works is with american band Mars Hollow. Hopefully this will be done in the coming weeks and coincide with the release of their new CD.

This latest IPRS features diverse music, from Disconnect, Akt, Gungfly, japanese band Earthbound Papas, and much more. Styles go from Neo-Prog to Crossover Prog, from Tech/Extreme Metal Prog to Symphonic Prog, with some Psychedelic/Space Prog and Italian Prog thrown into the mix. I hope you enjoy the result. IPRS 75 Ready for Download

Dear listeners, this week show #75 is now available for your listening pleasure. As you may have noticed, this week on the UK70s Prog Rock radio station, two IPRSs played back to back, for a grand total of 6 hours of music. That was due to problems in file transfers the week before, which is the reason why there was no radio show last week. The solution found by my friend Wayne, the owner of the radio station, was to play both this week, so you've got him to thank. Like the previous show, this one is full packed with new and future releases. Music by Yes, Sky Architect, and the Devin Townsend Project will be released later this month, so you'll get to hear these as previews of these new CDs. I enjoyed them immensely, and I hope you do too.

At first, I was surprised by fellow canadian Devin Townsend's Deconstruction CD. I admit that I was and am not usually a fan of hard metal prog, with what I call "death grunts", but after listening to the CD over and over (to really give it a chance and be objective) I realized that Deconstruction is closer in spirit to Frank Zappa's music. It is funny, and technically brilliant. It's still not totally my cup of tea, and his second release, Ghost, is more to my liking. Listen to them and tell me what you think.

As for Sky Architect and their wonderful new release, if everything goes well I will hopefully do an interview with them for next week's show.

Show #73 Ready for Download

After having done many interviews and special radio shows about forthcoming festivals, it was time to do a New Releases show, to showcase the new and interestng music that had come out during the last couple of months. CD that pleasantly surprised me in recent weeks are For All We Know, a project by Within Temptation guitarist Ruud Jolie. Another pleasant surprise was the excelent Ever After CD by Sanhedrin, their first of, hopefully, many more to come. Most of the other releases were long awaited, like the Von Hertsen Brothers' Stars Aligned, which we waited for patiently after their succesful ROSfest show.
FromUZ came out with a double CD + DVD album with music only they can do, and Credo, with Against Reason, are following their own path in the Neo-Prog world with an album concerned about the world we live in presently (the wonderful "Conspiracy" is a testament to the kind of thinking that is polluting the airwaves in America, what with Birthers and Truthers and the likes). Another surprise was L'Ultima Illusion, by Euthymia, a great Italian Prog prject, although I don't understand a word of what is said and sung. and of course, Neal Morse and Blackfield give us their best once again.

But the biggest event in recent weeks is the return of King Crimson. Of course it's not officially a true return, Robert Fripp having said it more ressembles a "ProjeKct". But still, with Jakko having been in 21st Century Schizoid Band, with the return of Mel Collins, with a rhythm section comprising of Tony Levin and Gavin Harrison, and with the maestro himself putting in his oh so subtle but important touches, this CD swoars above the fray, and, for me, signals a rebirth of the great KC, a perfect blending of the jazzier side they had in the 70s and the hard edge they gained in the 80s and 00s. A Scarcity of Miracles is a small miracle wrapped in hopes and dreams.

For those who didn't have a chance to listen to the radio show live on UK70s Prog Rock, this is you chance to sample some great music, and hopefully splurge a little and buy some of these great CDs.

An Interview with Sean Filkins

ROSfest and Terra Incognita Special Show

ROSfest and Terra Incognita 2011 are both coming to a close today. Last Friday on UK70sProgRock radio, I did a special show with songs from bands that were being showcased during these two wonderful festivals. Unfortunately there were some bands of which I had not a scrap of music (Daemonia for ROSfest, Rhys Marsh and SLP for Terra Incognita). It is something I know I must rememdy. There is also a preview of the new Riverside EP and a review of the show by my friend Andrew "Barnesley" Wood, who say the show last Tuesday.

For those of you that didn't listen during the airing of the radio show, that weren't able to go either to ROSfest or Terra Incognita, or for those that want to have a small reminder of the shows you saw at those two festivals, this radio show is now available for download (Podcast no longer available).

Interview with Valerio Rizzotti of Atto IV

This week on the International Prog Rock Show I had the pleasure of interviewing the guitarist, singer, and main composer of the intalian prog band Atto IV (quarto, which means Fourth). The band was formed in 2002-2003 and has produced two CDs. Their latest is the fantastic Shattered Lines, released on Galileo Records.

New music heard during the show: swedish band Introitus from their latest release "Elements"; italian classic proggers Le Orme with "La Via della Seta", released last month; and ex-Big Big Train vocalist Sean Filkins, from his first solo album "War & Peace and Other Stories".

Sorry for the delay, but being and Boston to see K2, I didn't have time to post the radio show that was played last Friday on UK70s Prog Rock. Now here it is, including interviews with members of Sun Domingo (Edgel Groves & Kyle Corbett, the other two are apparently silent partners...) and John Wesley done during the Montreal Marillion Weekend 2011.

Since this famous weekend we've had some sad news, the death of one of the organizers. Richard Bruce was a gentle soul and an avid music fan. He was also the biggest Marillion fan I knew (apart from Annick). We met often at shows, and wrote to each other through Facebook. He and Annick Gauthier were close collaborators, and organized the get togethers during the Marillion Weekend. They're the ones that booked Tempus Fugit, Sun Domingo, and John Wesley at the Brutopia. They're the ones that greated people entering the Olympia at showtime. Now a hole is left in this amazing duo, and in our lives. The second hour of the show was dedicated to Richard. And the third hour?

Yes! K2 are presently touring the East Coast of the US. It's a small tour, but it's a start! If you're a regular listener of this radio show, you know how I love this band. Rick never heard of them until I gave him a listen, and he became an instant fan (a little like he did with me and Beardfish). Ken Jaquess, the brains behind K2, is also the voice behind all the Simpsons characters you hear during the show... A very talented person indeed. All About The Enid

This week the IPRS offers an interview with the leader of the symphonic prog band The Enid, Robert John Godfrey. In the case of The Enid, "symphonic" is a moniker that truely describes their music. Lush, romantic, with hints of World music (in their latest especially), this band is only one to have successfully fused rock based music with the power, dynamics and scale of symphonic classical music. They released their first album in 1976, and have just released their latest, the wonderful "Journey's End" last year. They are presently on tour, so don't miss this wholly original band when they come to a town near you!

The latest IPRS, show 66, is now ready to download. A lot of new music in this one, and all great!! I discovered a fantastic band called Atto IV, which I hope you like, and I played a couple of old favourites of mine... two epics; one from Porcupine Tree and one from the Keith Emerson Band featuring Marc Bonilla. And speaking of Marc Bonilla, a listener corrected me on my prononciation of his name. It seems I've been prononcing the "ll"s while I should have prononced it "boneeya", so I stand corrected, and thank you Wayne for pointing me in the right direction.

Another thing: I've been really busy listening to music, taking notes, and preparing this radio show, apart from from "real world" job, and I still haven't had time to write down my CD review. I hope to do this during this next week. Thank you for your patience.

In other news: NEARfest has announced yesterday that it has cancelled its 2011 edition! Imputing this cancellation on low ticket sales, the 5 members of the NEARfest organizing comittee have acknowledged that it may be because of the state of the economy in the US. As my friend Peter wrote on Facebook "Where have all the Prog fans gone!" Well, prog fans are workers, tax payers, and are affected by the economy as much as the rest of the population, so I am inclined to believe the NEARfest comittee about this, which is a shame since they had a great line-up for 2011. I sincerely hope that NEARfest will resume operations in time for a 2012 festival.

Classic Rock Society Awards Show

Hi everyone! this week's show concentrated on the CRS Awards, so for the first two hours we had music from the winning bands. Which left the last hour for new music. After having aired on Sismico and UK70s Prog Rock internet radio stations this past week, the show is now available for download (Podcast no longer available). Newswise, the big news this week was that Phil Collins decided to retire from the music business. Originally reported last Saturday, the news was somewhat changed from what I originally read out on the radio show. Phil Collins now says that he wants to spend more time with his family. Of course, the fact that he has to tape his drumsticks to his fingers to be able to play is also a reason. I wish him a great retirement, well deserved, as he was for a long time the hardest working drummer in the music business.

Oh, and by the way, during the show I say that I will get back to you with the title of the next Pendragon album, but I never do, so here it is: the CD will be called Passion, and I reeally am looking forward to it.

In this latest edition of the IPRS I talk about the unfortunate demise of two great bands, Oceansize and Frost*. Both bands have been influential in their own way, and both have been labours of love for all included, they also were favorites of this radio show. They are gone now, but not forgotten, and so the first two hours of the radio show are dedicated to them.

The following hour is dedicated to new music by new Mexican band Vitruvius, TesseracT, Paatos, Minora, and Beardfish!

The radio show is aired three times a week, twice on Sismico, and once on UK 70s Prog Rock, which is part of the Live365 radio stations family. Interview with Graeme Murray of Pallas

This week's International Prog Rock Show is a special show on Pallas. After a career spanning 30 years, Pallas is back with a new CD called XXV (pronounced by members of the band as ex-ex-vee, not 25). In honour of this new release, I interviewed Graeme Murray, founding member and bassist, and we went through the history of the band, from their beginning as Rainbow to the "wilderness years" when Pallas effectively disbanded, to their return and to the present with a new singer and a new album. I will soon post a review of this new CD.

Our whole interview lasted close to three hours, so I edited a lot, and I mean a lot, to fit in our three hour format, keeping spaces for the wonderful music produced by this band. Some parts of the interview that were cut went in depth about live giging, returning to the stage after a long absence, and in depth thoughts about the departure of Alan Reed. I think there is enough material for a second show, or at least part of a second show. If there is enough demand by listeners I will put one together, so leave comments about the show and about your thoughts for a follow up show. Our Top 20 CDs of 2010

After having painstakingly listened to over 300 releases in 2010 we have finally come up with our Top 20 of the year. I must say that it was a difficult choice, 2010 being an especially fruitful year for Prog.

As I mention on the radio show, it would have been easier to pick our top 20 worst albums of the year (Feeding the Crocodiles by dutch proggers US comes to mind), but we soldiered on, and all of the albums listed here deserve to be bought, listened too, and loved. They are some, and only some, of the best music we heard this past year, and most could have easily made our Top 5. Rick struggled for two weeks for his top 3, the spot being shuffled constantly, even during the taping of the show. As for me, the top 3 cds were the one's that surprised me the most. But you'll find out which ones they were only next week. For now here is the list of our top 20 to 11.

New IPRS airing today and Thursday on Sismoco

Due to inclement weather here in the North East of America, we had to forgo doing a live show on the air from Mohawk-Radio. Rick and I recorded the show anyway at my home and the show is now playing on the internet through Sismico in Mexico and will be repeated Thursday at midnight EST. Hopefully, the show will also air on Live365 UK70sProgRock on friday.

Well, another week has passed and yet another show is under our belt. Today we played some of the new CDs we received or bought during this past summer and autumn, CDs that we hadn't had a chance to play yet. with the end of the year fast approaching, and with our next two show exclusively about the Top Ten of the Decade 2000-2009, this is your last chance to hear what was new in 2010 until our radio show in the new year.

In keeping with our year end list of the Best of 2007 that will be broadcast in early January 2011, we have decided to do two special episodes for the holidays that will focus on the Best CDs of the decade 2000 to 2009 (No 2010 since we will name those in January).

On last Sunday's International Prog Rock Show Rick and I had the pleasure of speaking with Nick Jackson of IT. To hear the story behind the band, and to hear great music, this radio show is a must have! By the way, Nick and his bandmates will be playing at The Peel opening for The Tangent (another great band) on Saturday 13th of November (That's next Saturday, so run, don't walk, to get tickets).

On a side note: During the interview, Nick was really embarrassed that some names escaped him when asked who he worked with in his new studio. He sent me the following note:

IPRS Goes Global and in Stereo

As longtime listeners know, every Sunday the International Prog Rock Show is live on the air and over the internet on www.mohawk-radio.com at 3 PM E.S.T.and, unfortunately, in mono. To provide our listeners with a true aural experience I've been recording our show directly from the console in stereo and making podcasts for all to download and experience the music as it should be heard.

Now our show has been picked up by two other radio stations. The first, Sismico, is based in Mexico, near Mexicali, the sight of the famous Baja Prog Festival. They replay our show every Tuesday at 2:30 PM E.S.T. and on Thursdays at Midnight E.S.T. The show seems to be broadcast in mono, but the beauty of it is that you don't need iTunes or WinAmp to listen to the show, a player is built in to the webpage. So simply open your browser and listen.

The second radio station to pick up our show is on Live365. The radio station is called Uk70sProg or Genesis ELP Yes & Friends and this one is broadcast every Friday from the UK and can be heard in North-America at 2:00 PM E.S.T. And this one is in beautiful stereo!!! They also broadcast directly from the browserr but they also have a free downloadable player.

So now there are five way to listen to our show: live on Sundays, downloadable on Mondays, or played back on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Interview with Two Edensong Members

The International Prog Rock Show was happy to interview James Byron Schoen and Tony Waldman, two members of Edensong, a great prog band from the USA. Rick and I had had the pleasure of seeing them live at Quebec City's Terra Incognita Festival last spring and were blown away by their performance.

On stage they are full of energy, and they are talented musicians. They also have a great sense of humour, as was shown when there were some technical difficulties during the show, and the band started improvising a ragtime. Poll #3's results are in and the clear preference goes to BunChakeze, with their song "The Deal". I'm very glad this new band got a nod of approaval from our listeners. 37% of you liked this song, and 20% of you loved "If the Sun" by Glass Hammer, a very close second! Third, with 16%, came K2 with "Passage to the Deep" from their excellent new CD "Black Garden". Rounding up the top 5 were Phideaux and The Watch, with "Hive Mind" and "All the Lights in Town" respectively.

Hello progheads!

On September 26th Rick and I had the pleasure of speaking with Mark Trueack, vocalist and composer for the Australian band Unitopia. Because of time-zone differences (3 PM in Eastern Canada, and 4 AM in Australia) we finally got hold of him in the last 15 minutes of our 3 hour show. Since we had him on the line and Mark is an interesting guy, we extended the show by a half hour. Black Clouds & Silver Linings

Was the title of the last Dream Theater CD with Mike Portnoy prophetic or what?

It's true! Mike Portnoy is leaving Dream Theater. Needing a break from the band, not having his heart fully into it, Mike Portnoy has decided, for the good of the band and for his own good, to leave the band he started and helpp make famous!

Of course Mike is also a member of Transatlantic, and has had numerous other ventures that never stop him from joining with his regular band mates to write and record albums. But it seems that he needs a break from DT, and was hoping the other members felt the same way as he. It was not to be!

Of course, that doesn't mean the Mike has quite the biz! He will have many other musical projects and we will be hearing his trademark druming on CDs soon enough (probably the live CD and DVD of the Transatlantic tour will be the first of these releases).

And what, pray-tell is the Silver Lining? Well Dream Theater have announced that they are going back in the studio in January 2011 to record their next CD. I know, it won't be the same withoout Mike behind his kit, but they are great musicians nonetheless and will surely come up with a great CD (finding a replacement for Mike won't be easy, but they will try).

So, as we say "The King is dead.... Long live the King!".... Dream Theater as we knew it is no more, but a new Dream Theater may be reborn from this, and Mike Portnoy will still be around on whtever project he decides to venture in! Good luck to both of them... I know I'm looking forward to hearing what they will deliver in the years to come!

Hasse Froberg, singer of The Flower Kings, and as of this year solo artist, was our guest in the first hour of our show, You'll hear songs from his excellent new CD, and some of his thoughts on creation of music and working with other musicians on his solo project. Has It Been 1 Year Already?

Yes it has! And what a year it's been. We've played great prog music, new and old, adn received guests from all over the world, from Michel St-Pere of canadian band Mystery to Sean Timms of australian band Unitopia, as well as Bart Schram of belgian band Mindgames, Ken Jacquess of american band K2, and Andy Tillison of british bands Po90 and The Tangent.

As you all know, we had an 8 week vacation, although I prepared some download only podcasts so that we would not be forgotten (though we were gone). But now we are back!

This week we celebrated our first year anniversary, and for the occasion we received phone calls from many of our favorite artists.
